No one fits between my reflection and me. But as we talk, I step to the side and let the Poet enter the text, and she returns my gaze.
I COULD BEGIN WITH an experiment published by the University of Liverpool. It asks us to imagine that weâre standing at the bathroom mirror. Imagine it in detail. Our hands resting on the white sink. The blue-tiled wall behind us. Containers of various sizes, full of liquids and creams, are grouped together with the soaps and toothpaste, the landscape of a routine. Now that we have the scene in our minds, we have to hold it there while answering two questions: What size is the copy of your face in the mirror? What would happen to it if you started walking backward?
